Hi Guys, need some help here. I'm a newbie, got the 94' chaparral about 2 months ago and have been out a number of times. everything turned out well everytime until last saturday when my engine stalled while underway. I was on my way back to marina when it happened. I was just cruising slow around 5 to 10mph 3k RPM becasue of the big waves when it suddenly bogged down and died. I tried starting but it just wont start. My battery is strong and starter is cranking fine. I opened the engine compartment and smelled gas that is not fully burnt/combusted. Anyway, i tried starting again and gave it a few pumps on the throttle. Still wont start and started to smell real gas now. I was thinking it could be flooded now. I rested and tried staring every 15 to 20 minutes interval. Electrical seems to be fine. We drifted for more than a mile in the next hour, storm clouds is almost above us. After an hour or so, I started the engine and then it sounded like it wanted to go. After 2 more cranks, it came alive, and ran fine at 3k rpm. I was able to head back to the marina/statepark slow and go home.
I am figuring out what caused that incident.
1. If you are underway, can your engine still get flooded? The boat is rockin real hard due to the big waves. Or did it starved for fuel?
2. Could water get into my fuel line? I have water below the engine compartment everytime, still need to get my bellows replaced, not sure if this is an issue for what happened.
3. Could i have a contaminated fuel? dirt or water got sucked up due to heavy rockin of the boat?
Thanks!
