Hoping someone here can help me out. I am not getting a consistent spark on the top cylinder. I have swapped coils, plugs, and wires and the problem remains on the same cylinder. I have also pulled the flywheel to look for anything obvious but everything looks perfect. Where should I try next?

Don't have access to it right now I am at work. Good point though. It is a 1982 model if that helps.

component swaps still yield same result....look to the power pack and associated wiring into and out of.....< could be as simple as a pin not making good contact in a connector >...on that ignition,1982, the components under the flywheel won't just affect a single cylinder...the trigger and power coil are both either - or....they work neither cylinder or both cylinders

Is it only the spark that isn't consistent or the actual firing of that cylinder? If it is only the spark, that is better news then being the cylinder. Because the cylinder being finicky could be a compression/ring issues...

Sometimes it runs really well. Usually when I first start it up until it warms up and then is inconsistent. When it is running I can pull the plug wires one at a time and the top one is not firing or only firing sporadically. I will check the wiring next. Is there any way to check the powerpack and is it rare for one of these to fail? Thanks

No the plug is just oily. Wouldn't the wire still spark when I pulled it off of the plug if there was an issue with that cylinder?

yes...the ignition system is independent of the cylinder condition, if that's what you're asking....power pack failure is not an uncommon condition

My guess would be a bad connection somewhere or a power pack. Or else a bad ground.
