Hello All,

I have a friend of mine here at my house... He has an outboard 40HP Force motor.. When you turn the key the sylinoid clicks but the starter does no engage at all.. I have the starter out, How can I test the starter? It only has one power wire that goes to it.. If I put power to it it should engage. Is this correct?

Thanks,

Ant...

put it in a vice or under your foot ( big kick) put some jump leads one to the terminal and touch the other on the case ..it should go . Whilst you have it off clean the drive end in parffin or wd40 Not oil or grease .... you did not need to take if off just short out the solenoid terminals ..the big bolts with a screwdriver.

After repairing with the new starter you might want to open and investigate the old one. Unless, the windings are burnt (and you can smell it if it did even before you open it up), you can probably salvage the old starter for a back up. Sometimes it's just a matter of cleaning the brush holders, commutator (copper sliding contacts) and armature or even replacing the brushes.
