40 HP Merc no spark

Hi <br />I have a 40hp merc Serial num 3404393.<br />I had spark earlier today and managed to get it to fire a little by pouring fuel into cylinders and in carb but have now lost all spark. <br />Is the stator or cdi likly to be stuffed?<br />Reason i have the motor is it just died on the guy out on the water so he bought a new one.<br />Any ideas would be great and if i could find what year merc it is too.<br />Thanks

Hi<br />Its a 2cyl merc but not quite sure of the year on the chart.<br />Is cdi unit the same thing as the switch box?<br />Thanks

Is it possible to hook up cdi from a 50hp merc to test if cdi or stator is causing the problem?<br />Also the underneath the rubber boot of the coil the U shapped metal cover is chipped and cracked all over.<br />Would sparks arcing do this and coil no good?<br />Thanks

Trying to find out year when they printed "direct 2 charge" on lower units<br />Any ideas? what is direct 2 charge?<br />Cheers
