I am removing the prop shaft from a 40 hp johnson (1992) and have a question..Do i have to remove the drive shaft completly or just take the nut off of the pinion gear to get the prop shaft out? I have everything else out and did not want to go any further until i found out if i had to remove the drive shaft...how about the shift linkage? do I have to remove it?

thanks

Chad

hey chad, dont quote me on this but im pretty sure you have to drop the lower unit cause the drive shaft spins a helicoidal gear which is constantly meshed with the prop output shaft

drive shaft yes, shift linkage, not sure, you ll know more once you re into it, but dont take apart more than you have to, start with the shaft and see from there
