40 HP Stator or Switch Box ????

No spark to all four coils!!!<br /><br />I do not have continuity (ohms) between blue and blue/white wires on stator. According to manual the book says to replace stator. My Uncle had same problem, replaced stator and it did not solve starting problem. He replaced switch box and was up and running.<br /><br />Does anyone know a sure fired way to test switch box versus stator to isolate problem???<br /><br />Does stator either work or not work?? Can it be intermittant??<br /><br />Does switch box either work or not work?? Can it be intermittant??<br /><br />1994 electric Mariner 4 Cyl. w 16 amp Black Stator and voltage regulator.<br /><br />Thanks,<br />JCH55

The stator should be tested by checking for continuity through the two stator leads. If you did not have continuity, it is bad. Whether is could work intermitently does not matter, because you need it to work all the time. However, I image if your wiring is bad it could short out at times. Maybe the oldtimers could clarify that one. My manual does not show any tests for the switch box.

I'm not an old timer but my understanding is there is no way to check the pack. You need to check the stator and trigger, rule them out then suspect the pack. Good luck.<br />CU

The black stators fail eventually anyway...even if its the powerpack..you are better off yanking the stator off and getting the change up, rather than be stranded out on the water.<br /><br />Ref to 96-1 Red Stator implementation. That is the bulletin from Mercury.<br /><br />TMD

Hey Marine Doctor, thanks for the reply!!!<br /><br />Where do I find the bulletin 96-1 that you referenced in your reply??<br /><br />I have been considering buying a black stator from seiler, CDI stator. They believe it is better than the red. I got 10 years out of the original. That doesn't sound too bad when you consider it is half the price of new from a dealer.<br /><br />The dealers tell me I should change to a red.<br />Do you know the reason?
