402 40hp merc........AGAIN!

I fixed the control box wiring. Took the boat out tonight. Ran great...a little slow though. Pulled over to say hi to a friend...turned off the motor. Went to start it back up....I have no gears. No reverse/forward. Is it the lower unit? If so...any fixes? Had no problems with this until now. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

does it make any attempt to go into gear? any noises, grinding, or anything coming from the lower unit when you try to shift it into gear? explain a little bit more.

It did earlier...but tonight ....no. It used to grind into gear.
