40hp Lower Unit Looking

Im looking for a good 40hp lower unit and drive shaft. Do I need the same year lower unit or will other year 40hp lower units work? You can find some and they say they will fit? Not sure does anyone know?

Most mid size units are interchangable, some of the 3 cyl engines had a differant gear ratio but still fit but will alter preformace
