Hey,
This is a good one.
Working on a '62 evinrude 40hp M#35530.
Am reassembling PH after rebore.

Have a 2-part question regarding the last steps on crankshaft assembly install before assembling crankcase.

I pasted 4 photos below.

Part 1: As noted in the photo of the parts diagram, there is a "carbon seal quad ring" that I gather goes next in line after the bearing. The motor that I disassembled DID NOT have this installed. When you ad the 1/8" thick rubber washer it extends the items closer to the end. This makes that spring awfully tight, almost pressed completely flat (you notice by the photo how I have about 1/2" of room). Am I on the right track? OR does the larger plastic bearing seal go next??

Part 2: I believe below the rubber quad seal is followed by a plastc "bearing seal". Both parts are different on each side. On the rubber seal is sort of a lip and a slight channel. On the plastic (hollow) seal there are 2 holes on one side.

Any idea the order and position of these??

Thanks Much-

Referring to your parts list:

The o-ring goes AROUND the bearing, in the groove in the case.

The quad ring goes INSIDE the carbon seal. Be careful, that carbon seal is fragile and will make you say durn when you break it.

Then the carbon seal slides onto the shaft, with the raised flat side against the bearing. (Oil it first). The two notches really don't do anything, but they go DOWN.

Then the large spring retainer washer, the spring goes inside the recess.

The spring

The smaller spring retaner washer, raised edge inside the spring.

The snap ring. Note one side of the snap ring has sharp edges. That side goes DOWN.

It is easier if you assemble the case first, then put the seal on the protruding shaft.

Holy Cow FR, you must have done this before.

That's the first I've heard of the seal going inside the other, THANKS!

What threw me was I had an old rusty parts motor that the carbon seal had broke and fell off... and there sat the quad seal (and I did not notice it on my motor since it was inside). Mine was indeed inside. Thanks again.
