I have a 454 Mercruiser bravo 1 outdrive. 1990 Wellcraft 23 nova xl. I hooked muffs up to it with a strong water source. It started pretty easy, soon as it started I noticed it was shooting pink fluid out the exhaust I didn’t know at the time but I think they was the antifreeze that the shop put it in to winterize it. After about 2 min the water started no flowing as much so I shut it off. I have heard that not all bravos suck water from the drive. How can you tell?? Also I think it was thu hull exhaust that goes under the water. I’m nervous about it shooting water then kinda stopping. I did not rev it up or anything. It was on kind of a small incline not sure it that had anything to do with it. I ran the boat s total of about two min. Here are some pics.

It stopped putting water out maybe because of an air pocket. So long as water is going it, it should be coming out.

Thru hull exhaust comes out above and not below the water line

The belt driven water pump will suck water so long as the impeller is intact. Take the pump apart and probably replace the impeller

The thu hull on mine is under the water. Not above it while it’s in the lake. So is that not thru hull. I have tried to attach a pic but for some stupid reason it says every file is too bit. Also the bellows there is one big one st the top of the drive that it. There is a hole below the big bellow and it looks like there should be snother bellow at the bottom bottom that attaches to the drive. I thought because I think I have thru hull exhaust that I didn’t need that on their. Let me try to attach a pic. Ok I mean really why won’t this site let me upland a pic!

yes, you have thru-hull exhaust. The exhaust tips should be just above the waterline while the the boat is at rest in the water, and obviously will be well above the waterline while the boat is underway.

As stated, you should check the impeller to see if it is still intact, if water is not coming out of the exhausts.

If your outdrive is a Bravo, there will be a sea water pump on the engine itself. Alpha drives have the impeller in the lower unit, much like an outboard motor.

If files are to large then it cannot upload, but other then that I don't know. I use the top right icon that looks like a paper clip. This adds buttons to upload

You may have to resize your pix in Microsoft paint or whatever you have on your computer. If the boat has a Bravo it may not suck in water when running on the muffs unless the impeller is in really good shape and your muffs fit very tightly. I'd use the Merc/Quicksilver muffs with the steel rod clamp that you can get tight and will not fall off. The square rectangular ones I used to use do not work well any longer because whoever is making them is using rubber that is way too stiff. Are you sure that this boat does not have a thru hull water intake? If so then you can't use muffs you must use a Fake a Lake or similar. Merc Quicksilver muffs.jpg
