in my 87 contessa 2850 with the big 460, when i am running at 3200 and up, the temp starts to climb to around 200 when i ease off the throttle- it cools right off. when im idleing under 1000 under way it heats up as well. between 100 and 3200, it runs fine timing at 10 degrees. new impeller i can feel good impeller pressure out the litle vent on the pump housing, on the back of the drive shaft and dock side not under way i cant get it to overheat just underway?? will the bubbles in the coolant water be the prob from the exaust?

Re: 460 gettin hot

Cracked head or leaking head gasket, leaking hot exhaust into the coolant. Yank the sparkplugs and compare deposits. May also be broken exhaust flapper restricting exhaust and retaining heat. Or debris in the heat exchanger on the cold water supply side.

I'm assuming this is OMC & a closed system?
You have bubbles in the closed side of the system?
How many & how big?
Are you losing coolant?
There is a test to see if you have exhaust present in your coolant...
Have you ever taken the end caps off of the heat exchanger & cleaned out the sea water side?
I'm not an OMC guy, but that is where I would look first ;) .....JK

yes it is a omc but raw water cooled
this is a fresh engine i cleaned out all ports, redid the heads, magna fluxed, new water circulator, new bearings, the whole deal. took it out and it got hot.. 200-210ish shut it off pulled the impeller. was on wrong, half the bronze was sheared out of it. put on new one- ran great. we took the easter cruise and got to plane took longer than usual, but we had 10 ppl on it, and the temp climbed up to 190 or so. eased off to 25oo rpms and it cooled right off. no heat exchanger. on ly over heats under way. up to 1000 rpms and over 3000 rpms runs cool at 1100 to 2900 rpms? new reman risers look good -no deposits

Re: 460 gettin hot

as to the bubbles im talking bout. they are commin up through the bellows at idle when the exaust is comming out of the prop and bellows i suppose. i can see them when i put a long hose and shoot the water comming out of the impeller housing. theres a little vent nipple on it that shoots excess water out of it. should that just vent into the outdrive housin and disperse or should that cool something as well?
im thinkin thats to keep water flowing through impeller though.

should i lose the thermostat for a quick ride and see if thats the prob? how do you change the thermostat in these 460 fords? the housing looks as if the thermostat is molded into it ??? or pressed in

I'm not an OMC guy, so I can't help you...
If you add "OMC" to your topic you will get more feedback ;) ....JK
