496 Oil Issue

I purchased a 2009 270 Sundancer with the 496 engine. The engine was broken when I made the purchase. After having it rebuilt I added 10 quarts of oil. Nothing is showing on the dipstick. I just tried to drain the oil and non was in the oilpan. Guessing it is all in the valley. But not sure. And yes I did put the oil in the correct yellow spout.
Before I pull the intake does anyone know why this happened?

first, the engine sump only holds about 8 quarts

if you added 10 quarts, where did it go?

if its not in the bilge, then you have a true mystery.

when it was rebuilt, was it built with the correct dipstick?

if your engine oil cooler is bad, you may simply be pumping it out your raw water stream out the exhaust.

I have yet to run the engine. I think that the oil is in the valley but don't want to pull the intake to see quite yet. From what I read the 496 holds 9.5 quarts.

if your oil is in the valley of the engine, then your rebuild was S#!T. seriously, there are about 12 holes for drainage in the valley that are bigger than your thumb. the only way that oil could stay in the valley is if the engine was coked up inside and those 12 really really large drain holes were plugged.

if that is the case, you have other issues.

How did you try to drain the oil? From a drain plug on the pan or through the dipstick tube?

First thing I would do is find a long dipstick from somewhere and stick it in to the bottom of the pan. Its got to be down there. 10 quarts of oil on an engine that hasn't run can't disappear.

Race Car Rich. What king or car?. What I did for a living until retirement.
I tried to drain it from a drain tube on the bottom of the pan. Then blew into the tube. Definitely blew into an empty pan. Engine builder is a little confused also. Guess I have to pull the intake to see where the oil is.

Truly a mystery!

Prior to buying my first boat in 2014, I ran a ‘67 Nova drag car. Tube chassis, 4-link big tire, 496 BBC on methanol. Aluminum heads, roller cam, single dominator. Just a bracket car. Switched from being strapped in a car with windows up wearing 5-layer fire suit, gloves, neck collar, etc. in the heat of summer to wearing flip flops and swim trunks on the boat. They each have their pluses and minuses.

if you blow a motor in a drag car, you coast to the end and get towed back to the pits

if you blow a motor in a boat, you coast to a stop and get towed back to the ramp.

they both cost copious amounts of cash.
