4hp johnny lower unit problem

1971 4hp johnson weedless, rebuilding motor and took the lower unit apart and found out it had been run dry. Noticed large amount of brass shavings cant figure where they came from. Cleaned and filled with oil, prop turns easily doesnt feel loose ran in tank ok. Is there something im missing that went bad? or is this a big problem waiting to happen??? scratching head and confused

There is a bushing below the water pump that the driveshaft runs through.<br /><br />Also, I believe there may be a bushing the propshaft goes into in the front of the lower unit case.
