Disregarding any readings........ With the spark plugs removed, do you have spark on either cylinder?

These powerpacks that you've replaced...... Are they new or used?

Did this engine ever run properly? If so, when, and has anything been done to it since that run properly date?

I travel that way alot, 3 times last 30 days, will be awhile before I get back to South Florida, but I never know. PM me with a contact email or number, I will stop by and look at the motor.

Re: 4hp Johnson CDI Complicated Question

Joe:

Removed the spark plugs and hooked up a spark light tester. Cranked engine--no spark either wire. The power pack on engine now is new-purchased from the manufacturer. I have also tried a used power pack. The old pp, the used pp and the new pp all have the same fault-that is-120V out of pp to cylinder #1 (brown wire) 00V out of pp to cylinder #2 (brown/green wire).

Engine ran with no problems 'bout two years ago. It stopped and I: installed new fuel pump kit, new coil, and checked all wires and connections. It has never "fired" again. I searched for over a year until I found the new power pack 'bout three months ago. Still not running. All of the checks I have performed points back to the power pack, however, that is only this layman's opinion.

Re: 4hp Johnson CDI Complicated Question

It's always possible to have a faulty new powerpack, it happens. It would be nice if someone close by had the identical engine OR a engine that uses the same powerpack...... a engine that runs properly. Trying your powerpack on that other engine would certainly tell the tale.

Re: 4hp Johnson CDI Complicated Question

Thanks to all who responded to my thread. I have tried all of the suggestions and am sad to report that the motor is "dead". While I may never know the "fault" it was fun effort to save the motor.

Thanks again.....

James:

Thanx for the manual offer, but the 1989 is an odd-ball and the 1991 manual probably would not be applicable. I was advised by a member to try "Gary's Marine" who is an OMC ignition "expert". Going to give him a shot tomorrow. Will advise.

thanx,

Re: 4hp Johnson CDI Complicated Question

UPDATE:

Well, not dead yet. Found that by disconnecting all wires from the power pack to the coil primary inputs I have the correct voltage coming from the power pack. However, when the coil primary wires from the power pack are connected it kills one side of the power pack output. Even though the coil is new (never used) I am going to invest in a new coil. The coil tests ok with an ohm meter --- WHO KNOWS--maybe its just a lazy coil.

Will update--coil is on order.
