Hi all and thank you in advance for some help.
I have a boat that is new to me this year, its a 2001 Four Winns 180 with the 5.0GI PEFS engine and a 1.66 SX-M outdrive. The engine is black so its the OMC/Volvo version. My previous boats were Merc drives so this is my first time with a Volvo Penta.

Outdrive Serial: 4202014961
I noticed 2 things that have me wanting to do some work.
1. Exhaust seems to be coming up along the transom, which based on my understanding means exhaust bellows leak as the exhaust should be coming out through the prop.
2. A newly developed shudder that can not be felt much when drive is straight but gets quite strong the harder you turn the boat, if the right harmonic is found it shakes the boat quite well
My assumption so far is this, in 10 years the bellows may never have been replaced (I don't know much about the history of the boat) and they may be leaking. I am guessing the U-Joints are going bad and possibly the gimbal bearing as well. I plan to pull the drive off to replace anything that is needed as well as do the usual proper maintenance when pulling the drive.
Any thoughts on the issues and/or warnings on things to know before I tear into this beast would be greatly appreciated.
