Re: $5.18 a gallon - ouch

I filled up this week, ( Lake Lanier ) and our Marina was $5.00 it's 90 octane and ethanol free. My boat doesn't use much gas so I can live with it.

When we lived in Mich and cruised the great lakes our boat would burn between 14 & 20 gals per hour, depending on how fast I ran.

Dunno if you trailer (I would assume not) but there is now a couple of land-based stations in Forsyth county that have a non-ethanol pump. Price is very reasonable as compared to even the least expensive marina pump on the lake. Last I checked it was less than $4 a gallon. Lucky for me either one is on the way to the lake for me.

I'll complain right along side ya. Mn/WI gas prices at the pump for our tow vehicles is around $4.29, give or take, for regular unleaded. While the national average is around $3.60. The prices have jumped .75 + in the last month. Minnwiscfornia.......

That price change happened literally overnight in Minneapolis. I still have half of my $3.60 tank to finish, really hoping the price comes down before I burn it up.

$4.85 at my usual filling place . . .

So, I am schlepping fuel from the regular fuel stations @ $3.55/gallon just to get a fair amount of fuel before launching. The tank holds 160 gallons  So, the full tank savings would be about $200

I just heard that the gov is investigating on why fuel prices increase at the same intervals each year, not that it'll help. So now we get to pay someone to check on what we are already overpaying for.

It's a mess up here. Just saw 4.36 on the way to the office this morning. They're saying it could last around July 4th.... bummer.

(Sorry, dont mean to hijack the thread here Ollie - a small tangent if you will)

I didn't buy a boat to worry about gas consumption. The enjoyment my family and I get out of going to multiple bodies of water across multiple states is worth more to me than any amount of money. My time with my family is valuable, can't put a price on that. My wife and I work hard for a living, and enjoy the fruits of our labor.

We have the flip side - offroad toys, big here in SoCal. We goto everything from Glamis sand dunes, to Buttercup, Gordons Well, Ocotillo wells, etc. We have a "weekenders" spot @ Ocotillo wells where we have a 40' trailer and ALL the amenities, including a built in swimming pool. We spent several years here, every single weekend.. It is over 100,000+ acres of nothing but offroad park and fun. It got old, really old after many years. The same scenery, the same trails, the same mountains. Boring.

Thank god I can spend every weekend in a different place If I want, and not have to worry about "mileage".
I can throw my boat in the ocean one day, and be on an inland lake the next day. Anywhere I choose to drive to.
So glad I'm not stuck in one place all the time.

I get it. I'm the same way...but when is it "Too High"?
I suppose there are folks on here with 60' Trawlers and have no problem filling up at $10 per gallon. I'm just not that guy. The way I see it, if gas is going to be at this price all Summer - shorter excursions and longer "float" times.....Also, there's plenty to do maintenance wise with the boat out of the water as well.

Rumor has it, 2 refineries(Exxon and BP) around the Chicago area, I believe, shut down at the same time for 6 weeks. Hence, the high gas prices. Given the 2 holidays, I don't see the prices coming down at least until after the 4th of July....... Then their's Labor Day...

We seem to get pinched every year up here, don't we? With or without a boat.
There's Winter 8 months out of the year - then road construction and increased gas prices... Yippie!

edit: - there was a big jump this time last year.....

Oh don't get me wrong, I completely agree. Gas prices have been ridiculous for years. Not to mention, being a California resident, I feel we have been at the height of the market nationwide in terms of gas, diesel, and even standard utilities like electricity for a long time. This state sucks not only my personal, but my business pockets dry.

I'm sure we are insulting the Europeans considering their gas prices are more than double!

I've said for awhile that this issue presents the biggest threat to the marine industry. Younger kids are more aware of their carbon footprint and a boat is a big shoe. Gas will never be much cheaper than it is right now. Too much demand from the rest of the world. We had an older Formula here with twin 454's. There was a chart in the helm that showed the gallons per hour at WOT. I don't recall the exact numbers but it was a "wow" moment. Today's kids won't burn fossil fuels at anywhere near the rate required to go boating.

Tulsa refinery down for maintenance/fuel switchover as well. Tulsa normally has some of the lowest prices in the country, but we're up around $3.80/gallon right now, when prices last week were $3.30/gal or less.

I think the biggest beef around here is why 2 refineries shut down at the same time which help create our ridiculous prices......

The Tulsa thing must be what's affecting us here in Wichita then. We've jumped the same, about $.50/gallon the last week or two.

They should investigate why such a vital resource isn't regulated. They regulate all the other "vitals" but the gas company lobbyists haven't been beaten yet.

Add ND to your list... The sad part is that I am less than 100 miles to the largest supply of oil this side of Saudi Arabia, and I can see a fairly large refinery from my office window. Yet we have some of the highest price gas in the nation!

I've never understood why this happens. We specifically ramp up production for just these kind of events. We're still around $3.20 - $3.30 a gallon. With the myriad of pipelines crisscrossing the country, extra fuel can easily be sent to needed areas !!!
