No it doesn't jump around so I guess that's good. I was just trying tests on different sensors and modules to see if I could find one that was the problem but wasn't sure how the knock module worked so thanks for explaining that.

But does it jump under a load the 10v that is. Sitting around not under a load wont generally casue a knock unless thing's are relly bad,

Re: 5.7 efi no power/WOT

I will need to take it for a spin again and check. I was trying to get it to jump by tapping a hammer next to the sensor but I didn't notice a change in rpm, was about 1800 rpm in neutral.
Might need to buy a rinda scan tool if it will help me find the bloody problem, I would get a mechanic in with his computer but he will probably just say I have an ignition problem which I already know.

Re: 5.7 efi no power/WOT

I'm thinking about buying a rinda scan tool but I wondering if it would help me diagnose which sensor is at fault if any? I know I can read the data from ECM but since the ECM puts in a default value for the sensor if it's faulty how easy is it too tell?
Never used one before and just looking for a bit of info, will the techmate scan tool be enough or would I need the diacom computer based system?

I have the PC software (and connector cable) and if a sensor is crook, it will tell you. Never used the techmate so can't tell you anything on that.

Re: 5.7 efi no power/WOT

It's normal when it quickly drops then returns to 10v.

it's output to the ECM is 10v and when connecting 12v to the KS harness it quickly drops then returns to 10v again.

Apart from that the way I did the timing was to the book, it was set about 12/13* btdc before I re-timed it to 8* btdc.
You manually raised the RPM before going into base timing mode?

I was trying to get it to jump by tapping a hammer next to the sensor but I didn't notice a change in rpm, was about 1800 rpm in neutral.
While this can be done, it's sometimes pretty difficult to replicate the same scenario of an engine detonation type sound, etc, While all by yourself with no help to watch the timing move on the harmonic balancer. And to hear the engine drop can be even more difficult as this scenario happens pretty fast. You really need to get into a loud rapid rhythm so the K.S sensor will pick it up and send the info to the ECM. Watching the timing on the scan tool helps with this.;)

In this case it's probably only going to tell you, you have a code 42. it's not going to tell you such and such sensor is bad.

The live data may help tell you something but you kind of need to know what the good values are to compare bad ones.

Yes a rinda or diacom computer is a good idea, but to find a code 42 ignition control circuit issue, it may be a 50/50 shot in the dark with this one, But there are little things you can do to help make everything you're checking a little more easier.

Re: 5.7 efi no power/WOT

Ye I raised rpm before setting the timing. It still goes to 38* btdc in neutral.
Well I was on the boat again today trying again and have found out since I was testing sensors the other day and had the engine running
with map sensor disconnected, I'm now getting fault code 42 and 33. The other day I unplugged the map sensor and ran the engine and it ran rough so map sensor was ok, I reset the codes and plugged the map sensor back in, with engine and batteries off, now it keeps coming back.
So I think my ECM may be playing games with me!!
My IC module is receiving 5v from ckt 424 on the bypass so that's good
IC signal Ckt 423 is showing about 1.3v at idle and increasing with rpm.
Now I'm scratching my head! Has anyone seen many ecm's go, I have mefi-1 s/n 16189069
Anymore ideas?

Re: 5.7 efi no power/WOT

I doubt its your ecm. Try this take the KS out of the system..make a loop circut and see if it cuts out in the driveway..do not do this under a load the knock sensor protects against detonation and if it is detonating under a load...that would be very bad..but running at no load should not cause a detonation

The Knock sensor is suspect here the rest of the circuts should not cause a knock.....Last the knock sensor picks up the knock in your cooling system..(Water) its not setup for hammer's...Take a timing tape and see just whats going on with respect to rpm and timing. Pull your plugs take a look....have you checked your dist cap to see if its cross firng..plug wires...All the tings that can create a knock

Re: 5.7 efi no power/WOT

so took the ks out of the system and it made no difference, didnt do anything to timing or rpm.
plugs look perfect, its had a new cap and rotor, havent changed plug wires but all plugs are getting a good spark.
my dad just reminded me that there was a solar charger on the boat that went faulty and was giving out about 19v which ruined the batteries, now im thinking it might have fried something but where do i start!!
i was checking a few other sensors, map and tps. ran engine with both off separately, engine ran rough. got fault codes for both showing up, shut engine off, batteries off, plugged sensor back in. reset the codes ok but after running the engine i keep getting codes, 21,33 and 42 coming back!!
thanks for the help for far!!

Re: 5.7 efi no power/WOT

Oops sorry, its a 1997 engine or so I thought with a new block in 2006. Don't know why I put 2007!!!
I got fault code 42 ignition control circuit, I'm using manual 24. I believe that to be correct?

Explain this plz 1995 boat....1997 engine..was this engine new.. was it a rebuild.... Was it a short block.... long block.. Were any parts of the old engine used in the new engine..heads.. dist....intake...

When you created the loop did you send 10v back to the ecm or 12 volts..or did you send any power back to the ecm

Re: 5.7 efi no power/WOT

Thanks for replying again gunner.
Boat is a Monterey 242 year 2000 with a 1995 engine, engine had a new (short) block in 2006 just before we bought it, due to previous owner running engine with overheating problem. I believe it was just the block that was changed and all other parts swapped over.
It's been running ok before but never reached WOT however this season it's worse and not getting over 3600rpm.
I sent 12v back, mine has the knock module so it would be sent to there then the ECM. I sent 12v as in the manual it said 12v whilst testing.

hmm orignally a mefi 3 efi (2000) system converted to a mefi 1..That's amazingly backwards. Can you take of pic of this knock module mefi 1 has a differnt knock system than a 3..Actually you have some home work to do if that is the case...

Which mefi looks like your's forget serial numbers,

I cannot be sure that a mefi 1 was orignally in that boat in 2000....but it is a old system (1) and cannot imagine that Montery would put a 1 in but who know's. I would take the time to go over in detail just what you have going on there. It sounds like someone pulled the entire wiring harness off put in a new one and one that was very old new's...The orignal 2000 motor had Vortec heads...454 tbi and they just threw that away??? Ok im getting a headache just thinking about it actually do you know if that ecm is even calibrated for that engine.

Do you have anything written down as to what the serial number was of the original engine? That would be the number that gives us all the good information if all that was changed was the block.
If not, post the serial number of the outdrive and the transom shield. If it was registered properly, the engine serial number should still show up at Merc.

Re: 5.7 efi no power/WOT

first off the boat is located in Spain, so anything is possible over here!!!!!!!
heres some numbers, i was confused about engine serial numbers so maybe someone might know. looks like they replaced old 1998 block with a 1995 block??
the current stamp on the engine block is 0F431832 (1995)
i have another number which i think is from engine cover 0L317164 (1998)
i have mefi-1, 16189069
i also have knock module bctu 16184069, which i believe is 806611T

gunner
ive been on that first link before its got some good info in it.
atleast its not just me with a headache ;)
one other thing, both the engine cover and electric box have engine spec stickers on them but both have different specs so something has definitely been changed :D

Ok there's a link that clean's things up a bit read all the foot note's

All 1997 models use the MEFI 2 (GM 96) ECM case, but are loaded with MEFI 1 (GM 93)
software. MEFI 2 cases can be identified as having long mounting bolts, instead of the
short bolts used on MEFI 1 cases. Power reduction mode has been disabled on all 1996
and newer models. If it is a MEFI 2 case, it does not have power reduction, regardless of
the software loaded inside.

MEFI 2 cases can be identified as having long mounting bolts, instead of the
short bolts used on MEFI 1 cases.

1998: MEFI 2 (GM 96 Software) ECM. Additional features and codes are now enabled. New
software for the DDT and Rinda tools is required

Ok there's a good guide: It seems your shorting out somewhere....code 43 is a knock 42 is a bad check

ftp://ftp2.indmar.us/Service Information/Electrical & EFI Related/MEFI1 MEFI2 TBI Diagnostics.pdf

You really need to determine if that a mefi 1 case with mefi 2 programing

page 11.

reset the codes ok but after running the engine i keep getting codes, 21,33 and 42 coming back!!
thanks for the help for far!! .......The ecu reads that as shorts or open circuts
