OK, I'm doing something wrong. I'm putting together a Mercruiser 5.7 from a GM Crate motor, and I've replaced my recirculating water pump with a brand new pump. The pulley wheel that I have from my old 5.7 bolts on fine, but it rubs against the pump when torqued down. Do I have the wrong pulley wheel for this pump? Am I missing a washer to give me a little clearance?

This is a close up of the top of the pulley wheel & water pump, looking down. The wheel rubs against the pump.

That's not the raw water pump in your pics; it is the recirculating pump.

Maybe some thin waters behind the pulley to give a bit of clearance? How do things line up with the crankshaft pulley?

Maybe you have the pulley for the raw water pump and what you need is the pulley for the recirculating pump. . .

I believe some of the circulating pumps had different "lenght" snouts.

Yes, the Recirculating pump not a raw water pump. Thanks

I tried a stainless washer, and it gave me about 1/16" clearance. It worked perfectly, but I'd rather not make a "band-aid" fix if the length of the snout could be adjusted, or if a different wheel existed.

I have to get a straight edge to check how the pullies line up. By eye it looks good, or very close at least.

OK, here's an update. Using a straight edge, I measured how far off the pullies were from each other with the washers in place, and the Recirculating pump pulley was about 3/16" off of the other 3 pullies. Way too far in my opinion.

I estimated how much I would have to grind into the Recirc pump in order for it to spin freely, and it seemed like 1/16" would do it. The pump walls are 1/4" thick, so I think I'll be OK. See the pics:

The areas that touched are circled:

The pulley spins freely now. This was a brand new Sierra pump, I thought they made good stuff .... maybe I got a dud.

Do the pulleys for the belt line up? As stated before, the newer pumps have longer snouts on them.

Don - Yes after my mods, the belts lined up, & alignment was right-on when I put a straight edge between the pulleys.

The length of the snout was correct, when I bolted on my pulley it was correctly aligned with the others. I'm guessing that the casting for the pump housing was too thick.
