well just for the timing light with no advance is only 15 but if i want the advance its 28. i think sometimes you have to set advance timing or something so that $28 timing gun can do it but the $15 cant.

I don't think you need the one with the advance... They are cool if you run into a engine with no timing marks on a tab... I never had one.. Always used this ol ratty looking thing I have had for years...

Buy the timing light with the advance feature. With that one, you can determine if the distributor is giving you your correct total advance. It also makes setting the timing way easier because you only need to find the the TDC mark.

Make sure you use a dwell meter when setting your dwell and set it first before you adjust your timing.

Your dwell angle and timing specs are correct.

Regarding your dipstick and tube, OMC changed those many times over the years including what threads were on the pan. You have the original tube now? These dipsticks/tubes are one of the irritating things you are going to be up against with OMC being out of business.

Re: 5.7 tune up specs

The distributor increases the advance over RPM. That is why I recommend getting the advance timing light. In the manual, there is a chart that shows what the total advance is vs RPM.
