My boat has shredded 2 belts in less than a year and it appears as though it is slightly out of alignment. It looks kind of like the tensioner is the cause of the bad alignment and I plan on replacing. The volvo penta store has part 3860079 for about $150 but gates has them at advance auto for about $35. The problem I have is I don't know how to cross reference the parts. Is this a specific vp part or can it be replaced with another brand? I couldn't find a sierra version. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Re: 5.7gi-ef serpentine belt issue and tensioner

I noticed there were 88 views with no response. Is that because no one knows the answer or because it was such a stupid question that it deserved no response? I'm good with either. I'm not usually one to cheap out on quality but vp doesn't make a lot of parts but market other's parts and upcharge a ridiculous amount for the same quality. I thought that was an upside to having an inboard was being able to pick up most needed parts at a napa and save a lot of money. If I'm restricted to buying volvo penta parts I bout as well be buying yamaha parts.

Hi, I don't know of anyone here who would read your question and choose not to reply because it is a stupid question. I for one checked the thread because belt problems on these engines are fairly common but they are caused by the power steering pulley not the tensioner. Therefore, I cannot for sure help.

Having said that, you have a GM block and I see no reason why a typical GM tensioner would be any different than a Volvo tensioner. If I didn't know any better, I'd buy the cheaper one. But that's just my uneducated opinion.

The volvo penta store has part 3860079 for about $150 but gates has them at advance auto for about $35.

How would they know that? Advance does not have a parts listing for Volvo Penta parts in there computer system. That would be like you going to Volvo Penta looking for a part for your GM truck engine. It doesn't really work that way. As Bondo says, the only way to be sure is to pull it off the engine and go compare them. But I can tell you, the car parts guys don't like wasting their time either opening box after box.

That belt tensioner on the volvo is heavy duty or industrial..... the tensioner in the auto parts store is a automotive type and will not fit. That pretty much sums it up. Here take a close look

Ive had them both side by side..Now if you find a heavy plz post it back up

Hi there skinnydip, sorry for the delay. So you're not feeling all that left out here, while there were 88 views earlier on the Volvo home page, there were actually only 5 forum members that opened your thread that would have been able to post while the rest of the views were forum guests that were not able to post. Now that the thread is a bit more active right now, the members that came in to read it since 12:13 PM today, is now up to 14 forum members that might have had something to add while there is 120 Views right now.

Sometimes some questions are tougher to answer then others so sometimes there could be delays such as this. And there are other times they may not get any type of response. Unfortunately it just happens sometimes. Nothing you did to cause it.

As you may know, iboats also sells part number 3860079 and if your interested they also offer a Low Price Guarantee. Just call them with the info that you found it at a lower price to save some extra money on an OEM part.

Here is iboats price for you,
Bilge Pumps, Submersible

And here is a lower price for you to let them know.
VOLVO 3860079 -

The only place I noticed it lower was ebay for 105.04. But in all honesty what normal business can compete with ebay.:(

Think of the money your saving by doing it yourself here.;)
Hope this helps, good luck.:)

Re: 5.7gi-ef serpentine belt issue and tensioner

Guys, I appreciate all the responses. Didn't think about the fact that most viewers were not members. I also didn't know if my question was just too stupid. I do ask some dumb ones. The one at Michigan Motorz is quite a bit cheaper so I will probably try to get them to price match that. I guess I was just under the impression that these were GM parts and could be bought at NAPA for $35. I did see an engraving on the front with the brand Liten. Not able to find much about them online though. Was hoping they would offer a cross reference. Might try to take it to napa first and see if there is an exact match. If not, i'll be back here to order one. I'll post here if I do find a match. Thanks again for the help.

So why wouldn't they price match?

Maybe they can't because of some agreement with Volvo. They may have a drop ship arrangement straight through Volvo.

Re: 5.7gi-ef serpentine belt issue and tensioner

I didn't get any details as to why, but after the guy I talked to talked to his manager I was told they couldn't price match 2 different places with better prices. I am not going to list those names but after pricing my list I ended up getting the best price from Marine Parts Source. Parts were in in just a couple days. Can't beat that service. Will install today if the weather holds out and let you know how it goes.

i got it all installed and the belt appears to be running truer than before. assuming it is working correctly it should last 10 years.
