Use the wrench to turn the crankshaft until the number one intake valve is at full lift (the number one rocker arm will be pressing the valve down all the way). Adjust the number six intake valve. The valve is adjusted by tightening the intake valve rocker arm nut until the rocker arm prevents the pushrod from being spun between your fingers. Back the rocker arm nut off 1/8 to 1/4 of a turn.

Are we really getting to zero lash and then backing the nut off up to a 1/4 turn?
This is what happens when you copy and paste from EHow.

Don, I turned the engine the way the starter turns it. Clockwise facing front of motor. Will get compression gauge tomorrow and retry lifter adjustment from the top once more.

Sorry I didnt take pics of the rockers, I had to move on with the boat and get my mind off the motor.

checkmate,
same heads and rockers, new lifters, pistons, push rods.

At this point, I don't think anyone knows if you have TDC on the compression stroke or not. Do a compression test, that will answer all the questions. The reason is, if you had #1 TDC on the exhaust stroke and did the valves and set the distributor, then you will be 180 out on the distributor and no compression on a cylinder or two because the valve are too tight.

I agree 100% with this and I'll add that a small block Chevy will still run 180 degrees out of time...it just won't run well. Ask me how I know....

Going to check compression on each cylinder, just got back with a gauge.

I didnt install the cam. I had a engine shop do the over hauling.

At this point I might be very suspicious of the alignment marks on the timing gears! They may have not have used the correct marks. A balanced timing gear for a 400sbc (as an example only) may have several small balance drillings.

Motor is now running. Distributor was 180 out. Even after taking it out and putting it in 4 times, being on and off TDC. Who knows, now all I need is an alternator!

But best prices for alternators seems to be ebay at the moment running about $100.

Good Luck

Thanks for the links, you got that right about best prices on ebay. I ended up finding a Mando one on ebay with my part #. Should be here next week.

Re: 5.7L Spark and Fuel, But Wont Hit?

New problem now, naturally.

Got the new alternator on and the system is now charging. When running the ignition circuit has 14.2V on it. It will run for probably 10 secs and then cut off, like you turned it off. It will then crank right back up and do it again. Timing is set to 10 degrees BTC.

I tried to give it some gas while it was running and it just wants to bog and die. Even after it has ran for 10secs and tries to die, giving it gas doesn't seem to help, its like something is making it shut off regardless what I do to it.

Do you have an electric fuel pump? If so, check the oil pressure switch or the connections on it.

This wiring diagram should explain how it works.'

Sorry I should have said that I have a mechanical fuel pump. Plenty of fuel in carb when throttle is pumped.

Re: 5.7L Spark and Fuel, But Wont Hit?

I'm going to take anti siphon valve out and clean it again and recheck the tank vent. I put a new hose on it before putting the floor down just for extra measure so that much is ok. I tried running with the fuel cap off and still shut off so, probably not the problem there.
If none of that helps, then I'm looking at something being wrong with the carb. I have heard of float problems with the MerCarb and how they could fill with gas. The rebuild kits now I think come with a better float. Unless anyone else has any suggestions, that will be my next step. Going to try putting a little gas through carb to see if I can keep it running that way.

I also wanted to ask just to be sure, there is what seems to be a vacuum line on the back base of the carb. This should be plugged off correct?
