I have a 5 HP Elto outboard model# 5D12E and was wondering if anyone
could tell me the year it is. Also what would the correct fuel/oil mix be?
I've always thought it was 16:1 but was never really sure.

It is a 1956. It may have been 16:1 when new, but they changed all Gale motors to 24:1 in the service manual. Your Elto is the Canadian version of the U.S. Gale motors.

Big Fairy, I just ended up with the same engine, but it's a 5D11E, a 1955. It doesn't run but has compression and sputters... Needs carb work I believe.

Samo, your 5D11 is sort of a mongrel. Only made one year. Slab-sided powerhead, single jet carb, gearshift, cable driven spark advance. Nothing wrong with all that, just different.

Have you checked the coils? You have heard me say many times that they are bad unless they have already been replaced. That carb is as simple as they come.

Crap, it's a one off? Hmmm... Maybe that makes it rare and worth something! I know nothing about the Elto's and I've done nothing to it other than test it. It came with 2 x '57 35's I bought last week. I dont really want to work on it. I'd rather use it as trade bait for an OMC of the same vintage. :) The lower unit looks like my 5.5's though. If they're the same then off it comes :)
