Re: 5 Year Old Trailer Tires

I towed my boat 700 miles round trip this past weekend. Tires were old and dry rotted. I had one blow out on the way down:eek: and one blow out on the way back:eek:. I had two spares so I was ok.
I now have 4 new tires:D I run 'em til they blow.:p

Re: 5 Year Old Trailer Tires

And how many years is that?

All depends on the tires....

Chinacrap ST stored outside - lucky to get 2 years.

Chinacrap ST in the garage - about 5 years

USA Goodyear ST (when they made them in the USA) - stored indoors about 7-8 years.

USA P tires - stored indoors - at least 10 years, whether on my trailer or on my classic car.

Reading all these tire threads makes my head spin. In the last 25 years I think i might have had 1 flat tire and that was because I picked up a nail. The only other "issue" was a sidewall bulge on a new Chinatire that was only on the highway the third time. Listening to the horror stories of losing 3 tires in one trip, yada, yada, yada makes me believe I must be doing something right. (or some others are doing everything wrong)

How many 1000 mile trips have you done on your 8 year old Goodyear ST tires?

Personally, allowing tires on the trailer for that long makes as much sense as having 8 year old u-joint bellows on the stern drive or 8 year old water pump impellors.

And unfortunately, we live in a world where there are few to no USA made ST tires. I can not order US made Marathon or Tow Masters for sure...I have tried.

When?

You might check again as Goodyear started making certain sizes of Marathons in the US again. I'm not sure if they will have your tire size, but they started making my size of 14's in the US about a year ago. (after pizzing off a bunch of customers with their cheap "China" made, wanna-be good quality Marathons......)

Re: 5 Year Old Trailer Tires

Just tried this last weekend. I need 225 75R15. Person I spoke to said that Goodyear makes them all over these days. Maybe even if you can get them in the US, there is no guarantee that the order can specify them.

The best tires I ever had were Tow Masters made in the US. Supposedly, those were made by Goodyear for Greenball who is the company that puts out Tow Master.

Oh goodie GY swapped the manufacturing back to US (sic), too little too late for me.. I had 3 of the 4 fail on a trip to keys a couple summers ago and they were about 3yrs old according to manf date , always air properly and stored out of the sun. If GY gives me the $$ I spend to buy tires on the road (only had 2 spares and didn't trust them to go the hundreds of miles back home . I am done with GY.
