So you had two batteries and installed a third is what you are saying? Also don't know what you mean by a volt regulator floor mount style! Voltage regulators are usually installed on the engine or are built into the alternator.

When you have a problem in an electrical system where there is a storage battery, the first component to suspect is the storage battery.

The 50 amp fuse will blow under reverse polarity. Something may be wired wrong ...

i was told by a great omc mechanic in stanton ca. if a battery is fully discharged and hooked up to a charger backwards then it will charge as such reversed polarity the pos becomes the neg post and like wise ( new info to me) he said he has seen this many times in his 30 years being a mechanic

its a metal box with two wires on one side and one wire connected on the other two studs are positive leads with the big red alternator wire on one post and a 12 guage orange wire on the parrellel post. the back of it has a big black gground wire commimg from alternator attached to post maybe the positive wires are contacting the body of this unit?

Re: 50 amp fuse blowing

Problem solved!! It was the positive alternator wire grounding out because it was touching the alternator body. I dont think i damaged the alt because i fired up the boat and the batt/alt meter would rise upon accelleration just as it used to thanks to all of you. especially a similiar post by chopper dog. man i love this forum.

Big red wires are carrying +12 volts and cannot touch the metal shell or any other wire that may be a source of ground or you get sparks and blown fuses. It's called a short circuit.
