50 horse yamaha question

there is a little steel wire coming out from behind a plate on the lower left of the motor stadning behind the motor. it just grounds to a screw on the outside there.it comes off a thing under that plate with a rubber bushing or something on it.<br /><br />this wire broke. is it needed ? do i need to tape it back together?

It is a ground strap. If the engine is exposed to salt water. It would be a good idea to replace it. Not necessary to special order, it is a wire.

if it is in fresh water can i do with out it? or should i reconnect it? it looks melted on the 2 ends. <br /><br />what caused this?

Sounds to me like an earth wire for an anode. Reconnect it even if you are in fresh water. Corrosion due to electrolisis is still posssible.
