50 HP Evinrude won't go into reverse

Checked cable and cable seems to be OK. Disconnected cable and pushed lever all the way back on motor and still wouldn't go into reverse. Is there another adjustment that I could check

what year? I have a 1989 40hp. you can adjust the linkage to the lower unit, but you have to take the lower unit off and turn the linkage rod in or out. The adjustment I am referring to can't move unless you have the lower unit off. It is probably something internal causing your problem.

87. How big of deal to remove lower unit? New to boats.

they are not hard to remove, but you should get a book.
