Re: 50 hp mercury water pressure indicator

Hello
if the steering helm is making any noise then call teleflex or whoever manufactured the helm unit. I have way more sucess with the part manufacure than any dealers. most prerigged dealers dont wish to lose money on warrenty issues. but the manufactuer of the helm may want to know about any defects. most modern helms you cannot dissasemble. product liability and all makes them all sealed units . sounds like the dealer is not quite up and up. if it were mine zI would carefully inspect the impeller and pump upper and lower housings. we have a dealer here that one of the techs likes to start the engines with no water just to test them. he claims it wont hurt. he has been so good for my business that I really should send him a christmas card.but I dont he sells a lot of pump and housing kits for me :) :)
good luck and keep posting but do have that steering tested. email teleflex if that is who made the unit if not then look at replacing it. steering failures really bite

Thanks for the advice rodbolt. My dad has a habit of starting the outboard while I'm backing down the ramp (just to make sure it starts) I told him it would burn up the impeller unless it's in the water (since the impeller is made out of rubber and is spinning against a stainless steel plate at several thousand rpm) He fried the powrehead on his boat and the motor is junk.

Thought I'd add my 2 cents concerning the pee hole. I carry a 2' piece of weed wacker line in my boat for just this kind of problem. Mud dobbers love pee holes. When they get in there I just poke the weed wacker line in the hole and clean it out. Works great...

PS... Your dealer sucks. :D

The older Merc 50 hps like mine (73) also have a characteristically weak stream from the telltale unless you are running at speed. As long as the pump/impeller are good and you can hold your hand to the waterjacket cover without burning, I'd say your okay. But always check on the telltale on the water, especially if you boat in weedy waters. I'd make the dealer replace or eat the steering box...a warranty is a warranty after all.

Re: 50 hp mercury water pressure indicator

Company called and tried to sell me an extended warranty. I told them about the problems with the steering. They had a service rep call me. He told me the same thing as the dealer. I might as well have bought a used boat. I can't believe that a boat mechanic can't turn the wheel and tell that it is a warranty issue or not. The steering wheel had this problem when I checked it out at the dealer's when I was buying it. The salesman told me that they would fix the steering problem and the warranty would cover it. Customer svc. rep said that since what the salesman said about fixing the steering wasn't put down in writing it doesn't mean anything. Also asked the warranty rep for a phone number so I could contact him. He told me that they don't give that number out to customers, only dealers.
I've burned only 3 tanks of gas in this boat and it's still "under warranty".

New to Boating with a gently used 21? SunTracker Pontoon and 2001 Mercury 50 ELPT. The Tracker Helm has an Engine Water Pressure Gage with ?? plastic tubing going back to the engine but not connected. I have had the engine cowl off and I know where the cooling water discharge line runs out to the Pee stream but still can?t locate where the pressure gage port is. Also on the lower drive there is a hose barb that is capped off, might this be for a speedometer because it shows zero pressure with no forward movement of the boat and is minimal underway at full throttle.

Thanks for any help!

Wow man, you revived a 2003 post! Not the best idea...

Anyway, welcome aboard and the fitting for the water pressure on your engine is a brass plug located just over the spark plug on the top cylinder (remove it and install a barbed elbow fitting).

Edit: sorry, i just realized your engine is an ELPT without O, so it's probaly a 4-strokes. The principle remain the same but the location may differ slightly.
