I have studied everything and believe all issues are resolved with replacing my 74 mercruiser with a late explorer 302. I cant find the parts to accomodate the balance difference between this and the 28 oz flywheel.

Plz assist.

surprised you found an alt, fuel pump, starter, and rear mount. flywheels are a lot more than 28oz.

Re: 50 oz 302 upgrade

My understanding is all the peripherals from the original motor will bolt right on. The problem I have is the new motor had a 50oz crank while the only flywheel I can identify ever made for the 302 is the 28oz like the one currently installed.

Do they make a 50oz flywheel for this? I read a few threads referencing a damper that will balance this setup but cant find anything specific. Trying to source either a 50 oz flywheel or this damper.

volvo penta used ford 5.0/5.8 EFI motors in the mid 90's, maybe they have the flywheel you are looking for? it's pretty much the same motor you are trying to use but already in a boat configuration...

have you checked into using a late model 5.0 mustang flywheel as well? it may be what you are looking for. i don't know when they changed the crank but if you find that info, i'm sure there's a flywheel out there for you.

Why would he have an issue with finding any of those parts? I can buy them all day online. Also, the 28oz/50oz refers to the counterweights used on the harmonic balancer/flywheel, not the weight of the flywheel itself.

@crazy, you can find a 50oz flywheel/harmonic balancer anywhere online. I'd recommend a new harmonic balancer from summitracing or jegs (I used a summit racing brand on my 351w). The flywheel can be used as long as all of the teeth are there.

Re: 50 oz 302 upgrade

As haulnazz said, the flywheels are the same, the part you are referring to is the harmonic balancer on the front of the engine. The older ford 302 crankshafts used a 28 oz balancer, while the newer ones used the 50 oz. They are not interchangable. If you have a late model engine, you will have to use the 50 oz, as the 28 oz will not bolt to your crankshaft, due to a different bolt pattern. Also, you need a puller to remove the balancer, as it is an interference fit on the crankshaft. The firing order will be different on the new engine as well.

Re: 50 oz 302 upgrade

Thanks for the feedback. I havent pulled the short block yet so I compare the diameter and tooth count. Can anyone confirm the size of flywheel I should get?

I have found three options here: 162, 157, or an aftermarket 148. Thanks again!

find out the tooth count for an explorer 5.0 v8 flex plate and you will know which one to get. google will have your answer.

Re: 50 oz 302 upgrade

the 28oz and 50oz flywheels are the same bolt pattern...the weight listed is the imbalance offset.
if you have an older 302 with a 28oz imbalance, then you use a harmonic balancer and manual flywheel that is the 28oz balance....same goes for the later 50oz setups.....50oz imbalance motor uses a 50oz harmonic balancer and 50oz balance flywheel.

do these swaps all the time in putting newer 302's in older cars and boats
