50hp evinrude won't idle and runs away ...

When I adjust the idle up and get it idling good, then when I put it in drive and rev it up it becomes stuck and runs away with itself, won't idle down until I loosen the idle screw. then it comes back down quickly. Any ideas?

What 50hp Evinrude? What year? There are huge differences in those engines, depending on the year and model.<br /><br />Give us the model number of your engine, and someone will be able to help you.

I mistyped it's a 40hp and it's a '91.

Actually, according to the repair manual, It's the Throttle cam and it's adjusting screw that I was adjusting and not the Idle screw. But looking at the idle screw it adjusted all the way in. Also when it start reving and wouldn't rev down turning the key off wouldn't kill the engine either. I'd have to either jiggle the throttle lever on the carb. or loosen the throttle cam adjusting screw.
