I have a 50HP force outboard that doesn't want to start.
With fresh battery I experience the following:
Turn key and starter engages but will not turn engine over, IE; lugging
Re,move plugs and it spins well.
All connections appear good.
Starter becomes hot(very) aftera few attempts to start.
BAD starter?

Yo, Yellostrat. My first reaction is a poor connection in the high current circuit for the starter. Sometimes they can look good but have some corrosion between the connections. I would eliminate that possibility completely before I got into the expense of pulling, checking and maybe replacing the starter motor.

Good luck.
JB

Just to add to what JB said, yes the starter could need rebuilding or replacement if the connections all look good. Try the "screwdriver trick" too, before pulling it. Take a heavy screwdriver, and jump the high-current side of the solenoid.
