I just finished rebulding my ole 3 hp Lightwin with rings, carb rebuild, ignition coils, points , plug wires and water pump. After reassembly and the proper adjustments, the motor fails to fire. After pulling on the cord for a while it did fire but for only a few seconds and not long enough for final needle valve adjustment. I checked the points and coils and they all seem to work fine. But the carb dumps fuel from the carb front when choked, could this be a reed valve problem, I AM STUMPED! Also, how stiff should the motor turn after the new rings and waterpump?

It shouldn't be stiff. Will the spark jump a 1/4" gap?

Did you put a new seat and needle in the float bowl?

Have you been through the troubleshooting in Engine FAQs?

Broke the old chord today and have to wait till a new one comes before I try again to check the spark again.

The High speed needle looks great and the seat is part of the casting ( I assume). Could the boss gasket be to thin to provide an airtight seal?

I think scaaty is asking about the inlet needle and its seat, not the metering needles, Iron.

The spilling of fuel suggests that the inlet needle is not shutting off the incoming fuel to the bowl when it is full.

Please go to the Engine FAQs read-only forum and do the troubleshooting in "Outboard won't start" to determine which system is not working correctly before going further.
