model 557hg ser#7407 I just picked up this boat, it seems to not have spark, fuel is good, was told it ran 2 years ago and sat in the yard since then. how do i check the stator, coil, to see if either of these are bad. Any other help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Remove the flywheel and clean the points. That should get spark.
If not then the other pieces are suspect.

I hope you didn't do what I did (mine didn't come with an ignition key), and replace the key with a generic 3 position yard tractor switch. It took several days/weeks to figure out why I didn't have spark.. Turns out, that it's vitally important to have all those lines from the wiring harness connected!

Re: 55 hp chrysler 74-75

I purchased a switch from a marina with the same ID letters per connection and it works fine. Can you push your ignition to choke before cranking? I am not convinced the 1st switch was bad ?Now?. When this switch w/n crank the engine over, I thought to use some TV tuner spray and it has worked for years as the original. It finally came to me that sitting 9 mo and in use 3 mo the tarped and weather could cause some switch contact problems.

I have always known how to Hot Wire and crank and run w/o a switch which has been handy a few times troubleshooting. My close local outboard parts/shop went out of business about 2 years ago. I guess that?s why I have not changed the original fuel pump?s diaphragm (I do check it). Cheap Lazy Me! LOL. Actually I thought I would have retired the (1984 purchased) boat before now and will if anything major ocures.

I have the manual but the flywheel doesnt want to come off, I borrowed a steering wheel puller from my neighbor who is a chrysler mechanic (just not a marine mechanic). I guess an almost 40 year old motor doesnt want to come apart. It is soaking with WD40 now and we shall see what happens in the morning.

My switch seems to be fine along with most of the other electrical, I checked with a meter and I get 12 volts on ignition cause I was thinking maybe that wire was bad. I will let you know what happens If I cant get it to work I have a 40 hp force motor sitting in my dads garage I told him I was going to take, It has only been sitting for 3 years but it is a 1990. So a little newer. Also the boat it is on is a taylorcraft bass demon, I could not find anything about this boat except the specs on iboats, no pictures I wonder what happened to the company, they were from kentucky.

The steering wheel puller might be too light for that ?Old Monster? vs a harmonic balance puller or one just as heavy. Plus the oil and some pops on th puller with the nut loose vs off.

Yes install puller....tighten down and strike the center bolt of the puller with a hammer.....not super hard just a quick shock....It should pop off.
