This may help you out.....parts diagrams exploded views so you can look up the part and where it's located and what the service manual is talking about....http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/1725.cfm

Timing is weird with these motors.....there is a tool to find 36 degrees before TDC for setting timing..... It should be real close when the key is new unless someone messed with the linkages...

Thanks for the post Rick. I'll check that link out.
When I first purchased the boat i had a repair shop look into why it was not running, and they "Cleaned up the points" (Thats what they said)...Anyway it never did run, and I was givin every excuss in the book(Heard many horror stories about them after this whole ordeal)....I'm past that now, anyway is it possble they could have screwed up timing taking off/putting on flywheel?
Thanks!

Ok, I was just checking the manual for gap distance on the breaker points, and saw that the recomended spark plugs are Champion L4J. My 55Hp has NGK B7HS installed in it. They are gapped right at .030, but should they be used in place of the "Champions"?

Slow down ..think ...if the throttle is positioned at idle then it should be firing near ~TDC....so 4 or 5 o clock is way out .....sounds like the keyway has broken ... ....this means that the timing ring can move on its own.... by the way 30 deg is only 5 to 6 flywheel teeth....
What I did was ..remove flywheel ....remove key and timing ring . then align timing ring ( marked this side up ) with key slot and grind a small flat on the crankshaft side below the main key slot ( 10 thou plenty die grinder or dremil ) Then locktite the ring into place and drive a small key down into the timing ring slot ...nice and tight. Then use half of original key in top slot and re fit fly wheel. This way if the flywheel moves you cannot loose timing. mark flywheel and shaft with paint so you can check if it moves 75 lb on the nut.

plug gap 30 thou points 15 thou

Re: 55 Hp turn over/ won't start

Update: So, I took flywheel off with puller and sure enough broken key......Replaced key and replaced flywheel and 55hp runs great! It's quieter than some of the smaller outboards I've heard!
Took it to river, that thing must have pushed my 16ft Lund runabout fiberglass boat 30MPH! Wow, feels good to use it, and not work on it!
Thanks for everyones help!!!!!!

Mark the flywheel and shaft with paint so when it does it again you will know ..hope you got the nut to 75 ft lbs ...in my opinion using one key for both fly and timing is a bad design ....If your flywheel moved once it can do it again .....

Yep, marked it, torqued to 75lbs per sq inch, and put small key in timing ring like u suggested!
