Hello,

I had to take one of the carbs off my 55hp, 1977 (2 cylinder) johnson the other day and found this hose coming out of the intake manifold just hanging there. There is a nipple on the manifold underneath the lower carburetor that the hose connects to, but the other end of the hose wasn't connected to anything. I think the other end of the hose was just sitting in the air silencer box.

I have a shop manual and could see the nipple on the diagrams, but could not figure out it's purpose. Anybody out there know what I'm talking about and have an idea?

believe this is the return from the bottom of the air silencer. there should be connection at the bottom of the silencer, i think it will take any usused fuel that drips from the front of the carbs and put it in the exhaust. mine has it, just not 100% sure on function and i've seen motors with it disconnected and no ill effects

It is indeed a recirculation hose. But it should be routed to the carb or intake cover on the port side of the motor. Older models used the intake cover, later used the carb or the primer. Look for an unused nipple but don't confuse the line
that goes from the top bearing to the bottom bearing.
