55hp where does the purple wire go?

I finnaly found the problem today. On my starter solenoid there four post's as on all. The first post is direct battery power, the second is ground, the third is a white wire, the fourth is power to the starter. This purple wire was on the red starter cable. So I moved it over to the first post where it's direct power and the engine fired right up perfect. The only down side is when I turn the key off the engine still runs's. So where should this purple wire be? It comes from out of the block. <br />Second questions is when it's running it spits alot of oil out of the exhaust. I put cardboard down and ran it for about 15 minutes and by the end the cardboard was covered in oil. That would be a blown seal in the lower leg correct?

Ryan....what year is the engine. Can't recall a purple wire to the solenoid on any engine.

I hope that you are running this engine on muffs. If this thing lasted running 15 minutes without water then it is indestructible.

LOL at fireman!!!!<br /><br />Ryan...not all the oil gets burned in the cylinders. Some gets through. You may have a cylinder not firing also.

It's a 1969 55hp 3cylender. Any thoughts on what wires should be where on the solenoid. That makes me wonder if you've never heard of a purple wire.

There are purple wires Ryan...but usually at the ignition switch, overheat sensor and to the amplifire.<br /><br />The only wires going to your solenoid should be two whites, on the small posts, and reds on the large posts. One red should be coming from the rectifier for charging.<br /><br />If I might suggest, if you have a library handy, they might have copies of the generic service manuals, Selocs and Clymers. These would have diagrams of your system. <br /><br />Does this purble wire look like an add on wire? Where's it coming from?

Ryan, On my '72, the wiring diagram has a purple/white wire running from the choke solenoid to the plug (in motor), then to the choke switch, with a solid purple wire from there to the key switch tab marked 'A'.<br />Hope this helps, but to be honest, my purple wire is also cut.

Ryan.....Double check the wire that's on the starter solenoid. If it is leading to the purple wire that applies voltage to the powerpack, you will no doubt find that there is a diode inline with it.<br /><br />The purpose of that diode is to guarantee the proper voltage to the powerpack when the starter is engaged. If this diode is present, that wire should be attached to the large terminal of the solenoid that leads to the electric starter.<br /><br />If you have it attached to the solenoid terminal that leads to the battery side, you would have 12v being applied to the powerpack constantly even with the ignition key turned off.<br /><br />This setup was a add on feature as per a OMC service bulletin to combat the excess voltage draw that took place on some of the older starters.<br /><br />If your original problem was that the engine had no ignition and wouldn't start, but did start when you moved that wire..... your problem is that you are not applying 12v to the powerpack with the key on for some reason.
