Sounds like a funny question, but does my '57 gale 25hp have a lever to allow it to tilt up while trailering.

It's best not to tilt an engine (especially a heavier one) while trailering. Straight down puts less stress on the transom. But best of all is to use a transom saver that supports the lower end from the trailer.

and if it still has it they had a tendency to bend, and were not designed for towing. they were there to hold the motor up, for beaching..

I'd still rather have my transom saver bend than my transom!

If I beach my boat, will the lower unit just stick in the sand, or will it come up? I don't want to damage anything, but I may want to hang out on the beach sometime

Re: '57 gale tilt

It has a tilt release lever on the front, a curved piece of flat metal, between the stern brackets. Push it down and hook it in the bottom slot to tilt the motor. Release it to run so it stays down in reverse. This is to lock or unlock it in the down position. Does not hold it up. The friction is adjustable by tightening/loosening the tilting hinge bolt. Make it tight enough to stay where you put it. If you need to trailer it in the tilt postion, get a transom saver.

BTW, even when locked down, it will release itself and tilt up if you jump a stump. To prove it, lock it down and grab hold of the lower unit and yank backward. It will make a terrible snap noise like you busted something and come on up. But nothing is busted, it's just the action of that big spring on the rear of the steering swivel tube.

Thanks. I won't trailor it in the up position, but i will try that trick. Glad you warned me about the loud snap, I'd of been mad if I thought I broke it.(ha)
