57 Rude 18hp Convert to electric start

Last year I revived my 1957 Evinrude 15020 18 hp. It runs great, at least it did last year, we'll see after the ice melts this year.

One of the things that was posted in my rebuild thread was a picture by High Trim of an 57 electric start model. It peaked my interest in converting this motor. I've been digging around salvaging parts and thought I had everything needed.

The starter had been salvaged off a 1960 18 hp rude parts motor. Turns out after taking a close look at the starter motor and bracket it is a Johnson bracket that would fit a 57, part # 304767. I have a ring gear, starter solenoid, switch, and other needed parts.

Without pulling any parts it appears this would fit the 57 Rude but the bracket is missing the side mount grommet that holds the Evinrude cowl in place. It has the front post for the Johnson cowl.

I look at three options -

1- install as is and hope the cowl stays in place.

2- Install as is and try to fabricate a grommet / bracket that allows the cowl to lock on.

3- Keep looking for the right starter and bracket.

Does anyone have Evinrude bracket / starter that they would want to swap for this one?

Any helpful tips or advice?

Looked on xbay and nothing at this time. Trying to do this on a bottom feeder budget.

Here is the motor, the bracket and grommet on the left is what is needed to be replaced.

Doesn't the Johnson bracket have a blank projection where the Evinrude mount would go, that you could drill & tap? OK, maybe not.

I MIGHT have an Evinrude bracket. Need to know the starter thru-bolt spacing to be sure.

The bracket is recessed on the outside, the side where the grommet would mount.

Starter thru-bolt spacing, need more info to provide the measurement, define point a to point b, or what ever you need.

I know a couple members here have a working unit. Would the part number help. I can not find a manual that has the part number for the bracket / starter.

I don't blame you for hoarding.:D You sure you don't need a starter / bracket that fits a 57 58 Johnson instead?

Anyone else out there want to do some trading?:)

As I look at that starter / bracket, is there a way to separate the bracket from the starter?

You have to take the starter apart to seperate it. Actually not that bad to do, but is why they share a part number.

And Im not a hoarder, my wife says Im just psychotic, lol.

Try a wanted ad at aomci.org in the webvertize. Someone will have one for you promise.
