58 evinrude lark 35, pump problem

Just finished replacing the lower with a used from ebay, installed new impeller. <br /><br />When running in test barrel water pumps with thermostat cover off but slows down and stops when I put cap on (no thermostat installed). Water comming from larger of 2 holes with cap off and also stops pumping if I put my thumb over the hole. Somehow it seems to be loosing it's prime.<br /><br />Any ideas?

Could there be an exhaust leak somewhere causing back pressure in the cooling system?

Did you install the impeller with all the vanes curved in the correct direction according to a repair manual diagram?<br /><br />Are you sure that the water jackets aren't clogged? Can you force water or compressed air out the exhaust relief port from the t-stat opening?

I did install the impeller while turning the drive shaft clockwise and water does flow out the relief for a few seconds then dies down and stops.<br /><br />How forceful should the water be comming from the pump? The flow stops immediately if i put my thumb over the hole in the t stat.

mornin' Beach,<br /><br />these ol' gals are a lot of fun, arn't they? Buy,...they do seem to get a bit tempermental on ocassion.<br />with the foot removed ( & thermostat & cover off), can you connect a piece of heater hose to the water pipe in the leg? Then,... connect the heater hose to a garden hose & turn on the water.<br /><br />If there's sand & mud restricting the flow, this can help to clean it out.<br /><br />also, this should help you to determine determine if there is a significant leak in the tube (or somew where else). Maybe a seal where the tube meets the power head?<br /><br />Final thought (sorry if it seems academic but i've never seen your motor), did the pump mate with the tube when you assembled?<br /><br />Good Luck

Took it out on the lake for the 1st time, got the carb adjusted and she runs like a champ. Compression is 125 both cylinders.<br /><br />There was a couple of impeller pieces blocking flow, once remove water pumped great.
