'58 Johnson 35 impeller?

I was adjusting my carb with the motor in a tank of water tonight. Everything was going fine, brought the motor down to a nice, thumping idle, and then suddenly noticed that there was no water coming out of the exhaust hole.

I immediately shut the engine down and felt the head - didn't seem too hot. I know the water was spraying out with the exhaust about a minute earlier and then suddenly it was gone.

So, did my water circulation system just suddenly fail on me? If so, is it a bad impeller? blockage? any ideas?

I noticed this the other day on my '57 35h.p. I think mine was caused by the water sloshing out even though I still had the hose running into it, the impeller couldn't pick up enough water, I just shut it off and started it right back after the water filled up a little bit, Seemed to fix my troubles. Best of luck!

I would think blockage for it to do that all of a sudden. Another possibility would be you splashed a lot of water out of the tank, causing the water level to fall below the water intake. As far as the blockage you could blow air in the pee hole and see if you can clean it out. That sure beats tearing everything apart.

Hi Dostoy
If you have not replaced, serviced or at least inspected the the water pump empeller now is the time to do so. This area of an outboard should have annual service no matter what. There is nothing that will beat taking it apart for inspection. Also if your 1958 Evinrude is a lark model it is fitted with a thermostat. The regluar big twin model 35 will not use a T-stat for 1958. This t-stat will need service and inspection as well. Replace if it tests out bad.

Dostoy, I checked my impeller when I first go the boat and it had mud dobber nests in the water intake slots. Don't know if you have these wasp like creatures in Minnesota or not, but you might try that. Hope that is some help.

Well, do you have the repair manual, it not then try to get one.

I haven't done it before but I will have to do it soon on mine since I need to inspect/replace the impeller.

Best of luck

Nam
