Hi Porto
You should be able to find those thermo-melts at an industral supply. I asked this same question to one of my mentors years back. He just chuckled and asked what I need them for. To tell how hot my motors were I explained. He told me just dip up a hand full of water from the tank. drizzle it over the head/cyl area of the power head. If the drizzle sizzles shes too hot. If the drizzle beads up rolls around and steams while slowly drying, your good to go. I have used this simple method ever since and it has never failed. I do now have a meter with a temp probe. Maybe some day I will try it out. Remeber that when under way most all exhaust and water is sucked out the main exhaust behind the prop. So you may not veiw much activity at the exhaust relief port. The exhaust relief port is to give the exhaust some where to go when sitting still. If it was not there you would have a plugged exhaust pipe. Does this make sence?

So if the water doesn't sizzle when I drizzle it on the block (after running at high speed for a little while) I'm not too hot. As long as water is coming out of the exhaust hole at low and medium speed, I'm okay.

Thanks alcan, I'm aquiring another, slightly newer 35 hp Johnson project motor for my other boat, I will have plenty of questions for you when I get it.

Lark/super seahorse 35hp models had some differences from the big twin/seahorse models. They had cylinder heads with thermostats, as well as different midsections. On the big twin/seahorse models water was always present at the idle relief. The Lark/Super seahorse might have been a little different. My dad had one and thinking back I don't recall any great amount of water coming out of it.

If you take the back exhaust housing cover off, just above the rubber boot connected to the relief hole, you will see a 7/8 in. soft plug. Remove the plug, and remove any crud blocking the holes under the plug. Make sure you have the correct thermostat cover gasket. There are two gaskets that will fit this cover. Your's needs the gasket with a 3/8 in. hole that will let water down the side of the head and out the relief.
