5hp overheat & stall problem ?

I have a 5hp Mariner outboard. I believe it is a 1994 model. If I run it in the water for more than a short run it suddenly sounds like it loses power and stalls. To me it seems like it over heats. The cover over the motor seems hot and it smokes a little. How can I fix this ? I bought the boat a couple months ago and only have taken it out three times. The first time I didn't go out far enough for it to happen and the last two times it did. I am new at this boat motor stuff but I am very mechanically inclined. Please tell me how to fix it. :)
Thanks, Dan

If you're going to do your own work, get a manual. You're going to have to replace your water pump. But if you've run that motor repetedly with that overheat problem, you probably have serious cylinder and piston damage.

Is it a 2-stroke or 4-stroke? Oil???

Finally, a lot of first timers think it's okay to run the motor for a minute or two out of the water. It isn't. You burn up the water pump that way.

Cross your fingers that you still have something to work with. If that motor stalled and you couldn't pull it over, you probably have a big problem. If it still turned over okay, then you may have gotten lucky.

It's a 2 cycle engine. It pulls over good. It refires after it cools off for a couple minutes. When it refires it has full power.
,Dan
