I have a 2000 50HP Johnson that I bought last year. I am the third owner. I don't know that any preventitive maintenance was ever done to it. Although it idles rough it runs great.

My question is now that it is 5 years old what are some preimptive strikes that I can take to keep it running forever?

Re: 5th year maintenance

Any time I get a used motor, three things are automatic. Water pump rebuild, new sparkplugs, fresh gearlube. Unless those were done before you bought it, as some dealers will. Other dealers and most private sales just park it and sell it.

The factory advises annual water pump work, but realistically 3 years intervals aren't uncommon. 5 years and you're starting to push your luck.

Don't forget to add:

new thermostat
de-carbon engine
check full throttle rpm for correct propping
