Hello. I just bought a new boat on friday with a 190HP 4.3L. Took it to the lake today and checked the oil before running. It was a quart low so I dropped some 5w30 car oil in it thinking nothing of it since it is a chevy motor. After thinking about it I thought maybe that was a bad idea. Im going to be running the boat tomorrow and dont want to mess it up. Is it ok with a quart of 5W30 car oil in it or should I completely change the oil and start over. Id hate to ruin the engine right off the bat! Help would be appreciated!

Just a couple of litres of 5W30 shouldn't cause any problems. If it was the whole change at 5W30, I'd say change it...

New you say 'new', do you mean 'new', or new to you? If it's new new, then remember to have that first service between 10 and 20 hours. Most important.

If it helps your comfort level I'll also say that you're good to go for today - but, you say you just bought the boat on Friday, so you don't know what oil is in there, or how long it's been there!
Just for your peace of mind, you should change oil and filter soon.

Ok thanks! I appreciate it. Thats a good point. Guy said he had it serviced before I bought it but of course he is gonna say that. Ill get it changed soon.

Im glad I can atleast use it for today since i have family coming out for fathers day that want to go out on the boat! So I will enjoy it today and get it changed next weekend. Again I appreciate it. :)

What kind of oil do you recommend? Mercruiser 20/40? Or is there something else I can use.

You've just learned the very first rule of buying a boat. The previous owner will tell you anything because he wants your money.
Secondly, you will get hundreds of answers on what brand/type of oil to use. The two most common answers will be "what the manufacturer recommends" and "whatever you want to use".
Unfortunately, that is the way oil threads go on just about any forum...even iboats.

Enjoy your new purchase! You should be fine until the weekend.

Ya I was a part of a Raptor forum for a long long time. Oil threads never went well  Suppose I should know better. Ill just get the factory recommendation and leave it at that! Cant wait to get it out on the water today :)

On that oil question, you can use any major-brand oil you want, providing it is the correct weight of course.
As you are obviously concerned about these things you may want to go with the recommended Mercruiser oil this time:)

Another thought - if the guy really had serviced it, it shouldn't have needed a quart top-up!

I wouldn't worry about 1qt of 5W30, but would be concerned about other maintenance items like the drive lube, water pump impeller, bellows,,, things that could cause serious problems...

For some odd reason Mercruiser specs 20W40 oil, which you won't find in other brands, probably the reason they spec 20W40. Something close will work, 15W40 or 20W50.

You're okay with 1 qt. of 5W30. Next time you change your oil, go back with the spec'd weight oil--or something close. I agree with fishrdan.

I use Delo diesel oil @ 15W40. It's cheap and would work perfectly well in your boat. Just don't use diesel oils in any vehicle with a gas engine with a catalytic converter.

actually I disagree. You can use diesel oil like Rotella T in a direct injected gas car just fine. The additives in diesel-type oil are meant to fight the oil dilution by fuel that is common with direct injected appliactions, disel or gas.
