That's not running on all 8 cylinders! I've heard tractors that sound better then that! Put the keys down, move away from the ignition, and fix that engine first! :nono: :D
If the firing order checks out ok, check for spark on each spark plug with a cheap spark tester. Then check your plugs for fouling, or anything unusual? Personally if all else checks out OK, I think your valves maybe adjusted wrong, check that out also.

Were the valves out of adjustment? If so, do you think you got it right now?

Sounds right now... Don't bother checking the timing, you can't adjust it anyway.. If you can afford the coin, invest in the Diacom software for a laptop.. I have it, and it's worth it's weight in the shiny yellow stuff....

hi guys
it sounds so much better now thanks for all your advice, hopefully i am somewhere near right now.

i have ordered the mercruiser scan tool as advised by rinda guy, he said it would be better for the single user as i can monitor the engine while out

The next thing to do, is check to see if any damage was done as the engine was run without a proper valve adjustment? If the valves were too tight, they might hang open when running, causing loss of compression, & possible engine damage. You should do a compression test now to see what they read, and check or replace any questionable spark plugs.

So, what's new Henry? I hope you sealed the valve covers good, I burnt out an engine after setting solid lifters on one of my cars, I drove it to the city, & back, only to find I had a small oil leak afterward, it was too late then :blue:
