6.2L Fuel Injected Mercruiser Just Died, No Alarm

I have a Doral 270SC with a 2001 6.2L fuel injected Mercruiser and Bravo III out drive. Over the weekend I was idling through a no wake zone and the motor just shut off as though it was out of gas. There was no fault alarm. Since I had just filled it up at the marina, I know fuel was not the problem but it would not restart. I had the boat towed back to my home dock and replaced the fuel filter / separator. Still nothing. To definitely determine whether it is a fuel problem, I dumped a bit of fuel into the throttle body and still got nothing. She has good compression so I must assume that the problem is no spark but the last time I had a problem with the computer, she sounded an alarm. Is there anything obvious that I should be looking for?

Have you actually checked for spark? No spark could be as simple as a defective ignition switch or kill switch, to relays and fuses on the engne itself.
When you turn the key to run position, do you hear the fuel pumps run for 2 seconds then shut off?

And what is the engine serial number. Year of the boat doesn't mean much.

Don,

Thanks for the response. I plan to check for a spark this evening and I will also post the engine serial number this evening. I do get the two confirmation beeps and the single fuel pump runs for 2 seconds then shuts off when the key is turned to the run position. When the kill switch is put in the off position and the ignition switch is put in run, I get no beeps and no fuel pump. I will start by checking for a spark at the plugs since I have a plug light. Is a broken timing belt/chain a possibility? The motor has 750 hours of near flawless service.

To check for spark, pull the coil wire out of the center of the distributor and hold the wire about 1/2" from a good clean (Unpainted) ground and crank the engine. You should see a bright blue spark that snaps across the gap, also check at a couple of plug wires.

Get the spark tested, that's the most probable problem, but it's going to take some troubleshooting. Do a compression test after you check for spark. If you lost a timing chain, you won't have spark on any cylinder nor compression on most.

Don, you were correct. I followed the Electronic Spark Timing System troubleshooting instructions in my repair manual and on this website and they also pointed to a defective Ignition Coil. Replaced the coil and I am back in business. Thanks so much for the assistance!
