60 HP '76 Evrd. stopped with a clatter

I know nothing about engines and have just moved down to Oz and bought a 16' half cab with a 1976 60 HP engine. The engine, in the last 2 times when out, has been spluttering and when giving throttle cuts out, unless you give it time. With the first mix of fuel we screwed up and added 125:1 petrol to Oil instead of 50:1 (don't know whether this could be the reason for engine failure?). Anyway, I took it out on the water, same old spluttering, then mid speed all hell broke loose, and it sounded like we had hit bottom (which we hadn't) and the engine kicked up and stopped. On further inspection, the fly wheel (?) won't turn a bit and the props that used to spin freely if you moved them by hand don't move an inch. When trying to start the engine, it just 'clicks' as if something is seized and the small cog wheel that try's to spin the larger fly wheel just jumps up. Has anyone any ideas - is this a major problem ? Will a professional servicing be required. Thaks in advance of any help. Nick.

First thing you need to do is drop the lower unit and then see whether its the motor or the lower unit thats locked up.

Thanks Walker - means very little to me ! I may need to see a mechanic I think. Do you think that the wrong oil to fuel mix could be the reason for this seizure ? And more importantly what causes these lock ups ? Thanks in advance.

Nick

With the engine in neutral, the prop should turn freely. If it doesn't chances are the lower unit is messed up and power head (engine) is ok. What is suggested is that the lower unit be removed. Separating this from the engine allows one to now try and turn the engine. If it still doesn't move, the engine is seized and needs rebuilding. If it can now be rotated, it very likely is ok. Sounds like a trip to the shop is in order either way.

Thanks upinsmoke. Well the prop doesn't turn in neutral, so it looks like the lower unit could be stuffed. I'll see what the manual says (which is coming my way over the net, hopefully soon!)
