Re: 60 hp Evinrude NEEDS HELP

Thanks Bear,
Ok So After the motor is warmed up I push the throttle all the way foward and I go about 14 mph. The motor is running smooth for about ten minutes then shakes abd starts to go faster topping out at about 40mph. I then slow put it in neutral and the whole process starts over. This time I pushed the choke in with the throttle all the way forward and the motor took off until I let go of the choke and ran at the increased speed until I pushed the choke again and again it kept getting faster and faster until I topped out at 40mph. The motor ran smoothly the whole time. When I got back home I pushed in the choke and the choke seemed to be working. When this started I changed fuel, fuel filters, spark plugs and checked timing and there was no improvment. What do you think?
Thanks for you time,
Trick7

Did you change the fuel line from the Tank to the Motor? Does the Primer Bulb go flat or soft when it does this? Could be Bulb or Vent problem. Do you have a built-in Tank or Portables? Lets start there!

Thanks rickdb1boat,
The fuel line is in good shape and the bulbs stay hard. The tank is a portable and the vent is clear and in working order. The motor runs great the whole time, no sputtering or backfiring ang when i use the idle lever i get the rpms up over 4000rpms but when its in gear it won't get above 2200rpms until it gets past that point I discribed earlier.
Thanks for your help,
Trick7

My guess is that you have a fuel starvation problem. If the engine runs up to speed when the "choke" is depressed (Is that a choke or a primer on the 1996?) that would indicate to me that it is getting enough fuel thru the pump, and that you have a clogged jet in one of the carbs.

I am sure it could be other things, but that is a good enough place to start.

Thanks plywoody,
How would I be able to tell if I have a clogged jet? The choke is electric, it is activated when I push in on the key. I also have primer bulbs for fuel and oil.

Thanks,
Trick7

trick7,
I think that woody is headed in the right direction with one of the Jets being clogged. I tend to think that a float needle may be partially sticking when you put the throttle to it. It could also be that the float level in one Carb is not set correctly. In any event, I would take the Carbs apart and rebuild them, using a rebuild kit, from your nearest dealer. As for the "choke", it is a "Primer" type set-up. When you push the key, it shoots a small amount of raw fuel into the Cylinders, as opposed to a choke closing and making the mixture richer.

Sounds like a blockage in one or more of the carbs low speed orifices...Once the motor gets past a certain rpm then the main jet takes over for most of the fuel flow which would account for top end performance..

So basically I should rebuild the carbs? Is there a way to narrow down which carb has the blockage or just rebuild all carbs?

I would rebuild them all! At least you will know in the future that you covered all the bases. I know it's a pain in the A**, but I think it's the only option!
