1996 60 hp mercury tracker keeps giving me an overheat warning. Pee stream seems strong. Warning horn will sound sometimes right after I crank it up and stays on. Its using oil just as it should, so I am at a loss as to the problem.

Is the alarm short beeps or a continuous beep?<br />Short beeps is oil if its using oil & the tank is full try disconnecting the sender wire from the tank.Could be a faulty sender in the tank.If the alarm is continous is this happening in the water or on muffs? How hot is the engine getting? Can you put your hand onthe head between the plugs? It could be a faulty thermostat or poppet valve.Hope this helps

Its in the water. Pee stream doesn.t feel warm even when the overheat horn is blowing. Horn is continious.

When the horn is sounding remove the cover & touch the head between the plugs it should be hot but not hot enough to burn or make you pull your hand away.If its too hot.Check thermostat & poppet valve & flush block while you have the thermostat out.It wouldnt hurt to rebuild the water pump as well just to be sure.It may just be a short in the wiring or a faulty sender,if the head temp is ok.
