I have a 2002 60HP Mercury 4 Stroke carburated outboard and I am curious what the pro and cons are....of the carburated motor vs. the new (EFI) fuel injected Mercury motors? Are there any advantages of the older carburated models? I am trying to decide whether to upgrade to the EFI 60HP 4 Sroke. Thanks for your time. Casey

Do you have any complaints about your current motor?
Why spend a huge amount of money to fix what ain't broke?

If you just want to spend money, then buy me a new motor. :D :p

I have to agree with roscoe, as the 60 you have now appears to be a new model that's working good.

The advantages of EFI are better fuel efficiency (a carburetor can not meter fuel perfectly), better performance, better starts, better idles/trolls, less maintenance, etc. The only real advantage to carbs IMO is initial cost. ;)

Acutally, I just bought the 2002 carburated model...used....it isn't even on the boat yet. I will put it on a Lowe 1677CC Sea Nymph. I feel like I should have just bought a 2004 EFI. As I paid 3700.00 for this used 2002 and new EFI would have been 5600.00 packaged with the boat. Wondering if I should sell it and go for a new motor?

Whether it is worth it to you is something you must decide, Casey.

EFI performs magic on 4 stroke engines, even very good 4 strokes.

Better starting, smoother idle, no warm up hassles, better economy, more reliable, etc., etc.

Good luck. :)

I've got a carbed 50 4 stroke mariner and can't imagine spending big bucks just to upgrade to efi. Carbs work fine in all respects but they aren't the latest technology if you can stand the embarassment. The efficiency and reliability factor isn't enough to bother with...I'm going on 8 yrs without problems on my carbed 4 stroke. My other carbed motors have that many yrs and more without carb issues. Quick starts? That means it would start in 1-2 second instead of 2-3 seconds? How much smoother can it run? I have to look at my tach to tell the motor is at idle on my pontoon boat if there is any wave or wind noise. I actually prop the rear deck up so I can hear it instead of looking at the tach. You will find this out when you get your pontoon boat. Would my boating pleasure increase with efi? I don't think so. I think you are worried on nothing BUT a new motor is ALWAYS better than a used one.

I have a 90hp HOnda (carbed). Getting an EFI for me would be like making the switch from cassettes to CDs. It's the only thing about the motor I would change and I am still surprised that this year's line of Hondas does not include an EFI 90/75.

Thanks for all the replies. Have put me at ease. I decided to put the motor for sale for one week. If it goes...then I buy a new one. If not. I'll keep it for the long haul. Feel Free to look at it. It's on Ebay 60HP 4 Stroke Mercury. Thanks and take care, casey
