i have got an older 6hp johnson, model number tag missing. After rebuilding the carb, setting the points at .20 and re assembly the motor does not start, the same as before rebuild and general go - over. When I installed the timin plate I rotated the plate so the points were open in line with the word "top" on the cam that operates them at their widest point. I have spark on both clyinders. Adjusted the float as well. I got a feeling I am missing part of the equation somewhere. With a quick fog of ether it will fire and seem to run well except when I turn the tiller to slow as it will go then dies out. When I purchased it from my buddy he said it konked out and never acted right since. Is there a way "adjust" the timing or any other ideas on what i may be missing. I know this seems lengthy but I want to provide all info. and reapirs attempted, to get the best ideas. Thanks in advance.

Deep six the starting fluid. That is BAD for outboards. Use some pre-mix in a spray bottle.

How are the jets set? The typical initial setting is one and one half turns (1 & 1/2) out.

I have a long "lean/rich" screw coming out the top of the carb I.ve tried 1 turn -2 turns still needs somethin extra to get her going. I did have to split the crankcase since while test runnung i saw bubbles leaking from the seam, cut some gaskets a little rtv and everything inside was clean slight bit of carbon on the top of pistons. I work for a parts store so SeaFoam is in order (miracle in a bottle). Plugs clean and points were basicly new still shiny with what looked to be a new coil for one cylinder. The ?reed valves? behind the carb plate were clean and not gummy. All passages clear in carb I spray carb cleaned and used compressed air in all orifices both ways. It started as a cool mess with and re-do, but now it's getting to be a pain in the stern.

Ah hah! a little more information.

Try the pre mix in the carb. If it runs, you have a carburetor issue. Or, you still have an air leak in the crankcase seam or possibly a crank seal.

The carb. is very simple and cheap to rebuild.

While test running, all the leakse seemed to be sealed up. Thats what has me boggled on this whole thing, it's so easy but yet stil doesn't wanna cooperate. I may pop the flywheel an double check my points just in case. I believe other than the mixture screw and points thats all there is to adjust.

I double checked my points and verified .20. I noticed the flywheel says "set points T" the maybe 1/4 way around says "set points B". Like montioned before I rotated the motor until the operating cam had the points open at their widest. I'm sure the writing on the side of the flywheel means something can anybody put any light on the subject?

Here a is link with good information.

http://www.sschapterpsa.com/ramblings/OMC_6hp.htm

Your lucky, your coil, ignition kits, spark plugs, water impeller, fuel pump and kits, and carb kits can all be purchased here on iboats. Prices are very competitive and shipping is reasonable and quick. I used iboats for parts many time and have been happy.

Good luck to you!!

Something bothers me. You mentioned you cut some gaskets in relation to sealing the crankcase. There should be no gasket between the crankcase and cylinder block.
did you put one in there? If you did, you increased the main bearing clearance, and it is probably blowing back and forth around the center main.

No, no gasket there, just one where the motor itself bolts down to the rest of the assembly, ond one behind the ?carb plate? that allows access to the screws that hold the two halves together. While talking to the Johnson dealer they said there was a gel seal between the two halves so I just put a very thin skin coat of rtv between the two halves.

OK, I'll let you off the hook on that one then. Sorry, I don't know what is wrong with your motor.

Yah me either LOL, I actually built a motor stand yesterday and I think the motor got scared. I set it up, choked it pulled twice and I coughed hard, unchoked it fired right up and ran fine. When i shut it down the throat of the carb got wet so i'm thinking a minor float adjustment and hopefully things will be good Thanks for the jet adj. reccomendation DJ and everybody else.
